General Discussion / Personal Protective Equipment
November 08, 2012, 07:09:15 AM
Commissioners, Chiefs, Training officers. I am submitting this training information topic for your approval. Upon approval I hope for this topic to be moved into a training thread. Thank you for your time.

Below are different types of personal protective equipment(PPEs) used in the firefighting world. Below you will see the uses and reasons behind the equipment.

In the above picture: Structure firefighting PPE's, boots, pants, coat, helmet, fire resistant hood, gloves(not shown).
Also in the picture: SCBA, SCBA mask, radio.
These are the typical PPE's for the following: Fire(Of any type, except vegetation fires), Traffic collision, HAZMAT, certain rescues, certain medical aid calls.

In the above picture: Vegetation fire PPE's, Vegetation firefighting boots(like hiking boots), Nomex pants, Nomex shirt, vegetation helmet, googles, gloves, and ACSI safety glasses.
Also in the picture: Backpack containing: Fusses, water(camel pack) LOTS OF DRINKING WATER, medical equipment, firefighting brass, food, spare clothes, emergency survival gear, and a fire shelter(only protects from radiant heat, not direct flame.)

Used primarily in vegetation fires, occasionally used in a, "hike-in medical."

In love and memorial of USFS BDF Engine 57
Captain Mark Loutzenhiser, 43, from Idyllwild, California, Firefighter Jess McLean, 27, from Beaumont, California, Firefighter Jason McKay, 27, from Apple Valley, California, and Firefighter Daniel Hoover/Najera, 20, from San Jacinto, California.

Tomorrow will mark the five year anniversary that I lost a friend. That this world lost five firefighters. That this world lost five good men. That Idyllwild lost five protectors of life and property above themselves. That Alandale Forest Fire Station lost not just a piece of equipment painted green, but five human souls.
At approximately 1:00 AM on October 26, 2006 an arsonist started some dead vegetation on fire at the base of the San Jacinto mountains. Less than seven hours later, three firefighters were dead, two others were unsuccessfully fighting for their lives.

The fire was initially in the jurisdiction of Cal-Fire, the state fire agency. It rapidly spread and units from the U.S. Forest Service - San Bernardino National Forest (BDF) and local agencies were requested to assist. BDF E57 along with several other USFS engines and a water tender (tanker for you east coasters) from a local air force base were assigned to structure protection in an interface area above and to the west of the point of origin.

BDF E57 found themselves protecting the "octagon house", a structure that was a second home and was unoccupied at the time of the event. The other BDF engines were parked at other structures in the area.

The conditions for disaster were ripe, as the weather pattern was what is known as a Santa Ana wind event was in place at the location of the fire. Single digit relative humidity, severe winds and elevated temperatures were all present at the time of the burn-over. The weather conditions were compounded by the topography, and the location of the structure that E57 was trying to protect. A natural drainage ran from E57's location down to the area of origin. In a horrific twist of fate, the wind direction was in nearly perfect alignment with this drainage, pushing the fire up the drainage. Finally, a long term drought had dried the fuel to critically low levels.
The size of the fire was estimated to be approximately 3000 acres at the time of the burn-over, the fire behavior was extreme.

As none of the E57 crew members survived the event, we will never know what went through anyone's mind or why they reacted as they did. All we know is that we lost five firefighters as a result.
The official report was produced by Cal-Fire and by the USFS. It is a massive document, 114 pages in length. It goes into all of the details and makes the usual recommendations about how this tragedy could have been avoided.
While I believe that these events should be studied and lessons should be learned, I also know that the very nature of these major wildfires, especially during the initial operational period,  prevent many of the usual recommendations from being implemented. Communications are going to be difficult, accurate intel is not going to be as accessible as we would like, sections of the 10 standard orders will be violated and the event will be loaded with the situations that shout "watch out!".
For me, it all boils down to two basic decisions, both of which turned out to be wrong. The first was the decision to send people into that area to defend those structures, the second being the decision to try to save the octagon house.
Both of those decisions were made by trained, competent professionals with years of experience. Both ultimately led to the deaths of  five firefighters. Both turned out to be disastrous.
If those people made wrong decisions, so can I. That reality troubles me. It troubles me to the point where I have made the trip down to the site of the disaster and have viewed the remains of the octagon house, the unnamed drainage and the neighboring houses. I can honestly say none of it is worth dying for

Convicted and sentenced to death for five counts murder and arson.

In memory of the fallen I ask that all firefighting apparatuses and engines be temporarily painted USFS green (ID 16).
/carpaint 16 16

Tomorrow I will be going to USFS Alandale Station to leave flowers and to say my thanks. They helped save my home. I have a place today, thanks to them.

General Discussion / Be ready
October 25, 2011, 06:39:42 AM
HazMat training topic.

If you don't read it and are on active duty, I will know, and you will be demoted. It's that simple. Only way you are out of it are if you are Jack or Jenn, or you are none active. It will be simple as, HazMat in real life is not. I'll test you individually with different questions. Fail and you will be given an extended week to figure it out. After that you will temporally be demoted to Cadet, you will have to retake the training test then you will be reinstated. That is how it will be for ALL my training topics. So catch up. I am tired of people not knowing there shit. Read the ones I have made earlier, and depending on how long you have been here I will either demote, fire, or warn you.

Understand? Reply yes or no, if you have a question post it. HERE. Do not private message me about this. I'll just post it if you do.

I'm back and I am in full force. ARFD will NO LONGER be the ones without training. I want you to show ARPD and FBI that we know our shit, and that we are ready for anything.

At 05:00 hours GMT on July 23, 2011 the brand new Argonath Fire Engineering & Fire Administration building was unveiled in the town of Montgomery. Commissioner SugarD and Chief Alex Zissou were in attendance to the unveiling. Commissioner SugarD cut the red ribbon himself. The building features 1 acre size building on an 1 acre and a half size lot. Featuring a large parking lot in the rear and space for a helicopter pad. Located in the building will be administration staff. Blue prints for buildings throughout the state of San Andreas. Dispatcher rooms. Large sleeping quarters for crews. The building has not been stocked with vehicles yet however Commissioner SugarD is currently speaking with Argonath officials for funding of larger and more safe equipment.

Building is still in the process of renovations!

Since technically you are Argonath Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Technician I believe I can "note" this, so.

Noted
Technically? There is no technically...he is :P

P.S., he's a Paramedic, not EMT ;)

Considering California law, there isn't much of a difference. Ahahahahaha

General Discussion / Training
June 22, 2011, 07:59:21 AM
If you haven't already noticed topics have been moved around and some edited. Please take a look at the SAFD Academy child board. Any questions about training please direct them to myself. Thank you.

*So if I am not mistaken I have only two people who have not taken training? I know that is wrong, if you are a cadet you need training. Even most fire fighters have not received training. If you do not post on the sign up form you will be demoted, suspended, and/or fired.

Not looking for another fight... I just want to say this. Due to recent events and recent, how shall I say, provoking? Anyways I just want to say. That for everyone in Argonath Fire Department I have the up most respect for all of you unless you let me down. I am the type to give respect, even before it is given to me. Once you disrespect me then I take all that back. If at times it shows I don't respect you, either it's been a long day in real life(I know I need to relax leave game and real life separate) or it is training and you may have take something wrong. If you ever feel hurt by something I have said. Let me know. I'll straight out apologize for it. Also apparently I do not respect the volunteers. Well I do, like I said, until they give me a reason not to.
QuoteI agree, and that's why I will not stand for this. Users should not have to feel threatened, abused, or attacked because one player cannot control himself and take responsibility for his own actions.
That quote is from Battalion Chief, and founder of Argonath Fire Department Jack, or you may know him as SugarD.
I, if you do not know, work for a real fire department. I understand the difference between real life and a game. However I know some people that like the real life roleplay. So I treat Argonath Fire Department, like I would treat my fellow real life firefighters if I was their Captain.
Please Respect all no matter rank. Spread the love. Make love not war. ;D

As for outside of ARFD, respect should also be given and received by everyone. This is not only a community rule, but it is common sense. Please also see this topic:
